Hormones function like a symphony in your body. Each hormone plays a different role and they need to be in sync in order for you to feel and look your best.  If your hormones are out of whack, you can experience bloating, fatigue, anxiety, difficulty falling and staying asleep, irregular periods, painful periods, weight gain, and even headaches.

I have suffered from all of these issues which is what led me to find out how to regain my hormonal balance and I have truly never felt better.  There are a lot of environmental and nutritional factors that go into balancing your hormones and a lot of small changes, over time, can improve your hormone-related issues. In this post, I will share the three main tips to help you overcome your hormonal imbalance so you can start feeling your best again.

Tip #1: Your diet matters

Tip #2: Be aware of your environment

Tip #3: The best supplements for hormone support

 Your diet matters

Unfortunately, the traditional American diet does not provide much hormone support. Artificial flavors, pesticides, and GMO’s (genetically modified organisms), are just a few of the additives in our food that can wreak havoc on your hormonal symphony.

These additives, once digested, pretend to be estrogen in your body.  However, it’s not a good kind of estrogen, it’s a bad kind. It’s called xenoestrogen and it can act like estrogen but causes what’s called estrogen dominance.  Estrogen dominance can be responsible for weight gain, especially around the hips, butt, and thighs, headaches, irregular or painful periods, and anxiety.

In order to reduce your intake of xenoestrogens, you need to eat as many organic fruits, vegetables, and meat as possible and avoid conventionally grown foods at all costs.  The pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics that are applied to and injected into the produce and animal products are some of the worst offenders when it comes to xenoestrogen overload. Grass-fed beef, organic free-range chicken and eggs, and wild caught seafood are the best options to cut down on your xenoestrogen intake. Try to shop the perimeter of your grocery store and buy organic as much as possible. If you are worried about the cost of buying organic groceries, I encourage you to sign up for Thrive Market. Be aware of your environment

Eating cleaner is definitely important in the fight to balance your hormones but your home and environment can also play a huge role in your hormone health.  Thousands of toxins exist in our homes.  Laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, cookware, and even candles can be disrupting to your hormones.

The best way to cut down on toxins in your home is by swapping commercial cleaning products for more natural, safer options, removing plastic food storage containers and replacing with glass, and also changing out your Teflon pans to ceramic or stainless steel.  Plastic storage containers contaminate your food with harmful chemicals and teflon pans leak toxins into your food and into the air when cooking. Laundry detergent matters because the harmful chemicals can stay on your clothes and seep into your skin. Cleaning products also absorb into your skin and get inhaled during the cleaning process. You can learn more about removing toxins from your home and why it is so important from my “4 Simple Ways to Detox Your Home” post. I have also included links to some of my favorite non-toxic home products below.

The best supplements for hormone support

I used to be so skeptical of supplements. I thought it was just another way for companies to make money.  Turns out, they play an important role in helping to supplement what’s missing in our diets. There are so many helpful natural supplements that are easily found at your local grocery store. Of course, I do not advise taking anything until talking to your doctor but in my experience some of the best supplements that fight hormonal imbalance and estrogen dominance are DIM, Chaste Tree Berry, Turmeric, and Omega 3’s. DIM helps your body process that bad estrogen and supports your liver in the detox process. Chaste Tree Berry helps your body regulate healthy estrogen and progesterone levels and turmeric and Omega 3 can help fight inflammation which helps with literally everything else. I took all of these while trying to overcome my estrogen dominance and once I added these supplements into my daily routine along with clean eating and a pretty hefty home detox, I was amazed at the results. I experienced effortless weight loss, less anxiety, better sleep, more energy, and a much more positive outlook on life.  Eating clean and removing toxic overload can be a huge help but sometimes your body needs that extra boost and a little help in processing toxins and fighting inflammation.

Removing toxins from your environment and changing the way you eat can be overwhelming at first but the positive impact it can have on your body, health, and life is 100% worth it.  Visit my resource library for more recommendations on books and products that helped me overcome my own hormonal imbalance and achieve my health goals and don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter to receive 3 of my favorite SIMPLE recipes that promote hormonal harmony!
